Zenshu Review: An Animator’s Chaotic Quest to Rewrite a Tragic Ending

My Take:

What if you loved a story so much that you were willing to die for it… and then got the chance to rewrite it from the inside? That’s the wild and wonderfully meta premise of Zenshu, a series that follows Natsuko, a talented anime creator who, after an untimely death, wakes up inside the world of her favorite, critically-panned anime. I was instantly hooked by this brilliant concept. This is a chaotic, hilarious, and surprisingly profound story that serves as a love letter to the very act of creation and the complex relationship between a storyteller and their characters.

What I Liked:

The absolute greatest strength of Zenshu is its brilliant meta-narrative. Natsuko isn’t just a visitor in this world; she’s a god with a pencil, capable of altering reality by drawing new characters and tools into existence. I loved watching her try to “fix” the tragic plot points she always hated, only to find that the story and its characters often have a will of their own. The show is a fascinating exploration of themes like fate, free will, and the very purpose of art.

Natsuko herself is a wonderfully flawed and relatable protagonist. She’s not an all-powerful hero; she’s a passionate and often overwhelmed creator who is driven by a deep, genuine love for the world and the characters she has been thrust into. The show also does a fantastic job of deconstructing classic fantasy tropes. Seeing Natsuko use her “real-world” knowledge of the plot to try and warn the heroes of impending doom leads to some of the funniest and most clever moments in the series.

A Minor Critique:

If there’s a critique to be made, it’s that the show’s narrative is, at times, as chaotic as its protagonist’s frantic creative process. The plot can feel a bit convoluted, and the rules of Natsuko’s reality-bending powers aren’t always perfectly clear. The story’s messy, stream-of-consciousness feel is a core part of its charm, but it may be a bit disorienting for viewers who prefer a more straightforward and linear plot.

Final Verdict:

Zenshu is a wildly creative and thought-provoking series that is unlike anything else I’ve seen. It’s a hilarious, heartfelt, and intelligent exploration of the power of storytelling. The series builds to an epic and emotional climax where the creator must fight to give her beloved characters the happy ending she believes they deserve. It’s a truly unforgettable and unique experience.

This is a must-watch for anyone who loves anime, the art of storytelling, and clever, mind-bending meta-narratives. Final Score: 9.0/10
