Sakamoto Days (2025)

My Review

Sakamoto Days Review: A Hilarious and Heart-Pounding Assassin Comedy

My Take:

What if the world’s most feared hitman retired, got married, had a kid, and got a little chubby? That’s the brilliant and hilarious premise of Sakamoto Days, a series that I can confidently say is one of the most creative and wildly entertaining action-comedies I have ever seen. The show masterfully blends mundane convenience store life with jaw-dropping, inventive fight sequences. I was instantly charmed by its quirky characters and found myself laughing out loud in one scene and on the edge of my seat in the next. It’s a perfect mix of heartwarming and hardcore.

What I Liked:

The absolute greatest strength of Sakamoto Days is the “found family” at its core. The dynamic between the unflappable Sakamoto, his clairvoyant and perpetually stressed-out employee Shin, and the hot-headed kung fu prodigy Lu is pure gold. Watching this bizarre trio try to run a normal neighborhood store while fending off an endless parade of increasingly strange assassins is the heart and soul of the show. You can’t help but root for them.

The action is another area where the series is simply in a league of its own. Because Sakamoto has sworn a vow to never kill again, his fight scenes are exercises in sheer creativity. He turns everyday objects—from meat buns and brooms to vending machines—into non-lethal weapons in ways that are both brilliant and hilarious. The escalating threat, from themed hitmen to a mysterious mastermind named Slur and a team of death row inmates, keeps the stakes incredibly high and the action consistently fresh.

A Minor Critique:

If there’s one potential challenge for viewers, it’s keeping track of the ever-expanding cast of characters and factions. The show introduces new assassins, old allies from the legendary “Order,” and multiple criminal organizations at a very rapid pace. While this makes the world feel dynamic and dangerous, it can occasionally be a little hard to remember who’s who and what their specific motivations are without a scorecard.

Final Verdict:

Sakamoto Days is a phenomenal and unique series that fires on all cylinders. It’s a masterclass in balancing tones, delivering some of the most inventive action sequences in modern anime alongside genuinely funny and heartwarming character moments. It’s a story that proves you can find family in the most unlikely of places, even in the middle of a convenience store that’s constantly under attack.

This is an absolute must-watch for fans of action-comedies like Spy x Family or Gintama, and for anyone who loves creative fight scenes and a cast of lovable, quirky characters. Final Score: 9.5/10
