Momentary Lily Review: A Hopeful and Gripping Post-Apocalyptic Journey

My Take:

In a genre often defined by relentless grimness, Momentary Lily is a refreshing and surprisingly heartfelt take on the post-apocalyptic world. The series follows a group of six young women with mysterious powers who are among the last remnants of humanity, fighting for survival against an army of robotic invaders. I was immediately drawn in by the show’s focus not just on the struggle to survive, but on the characters’ determination to live. It’s a beautifully animated and emotionally resonant story that finds hope and warmth in the darkest of times.

What I Liked:

The show is at its absolute best when it focuses on the powerful, “found family” dynamic between the six main characters. Their bond is the true heart of the series. I loved the small, quiet moments they share amidst the ruins, especially their habit of cooking meals together. These scenes of simple connection provide a powerful contrast to the harsh reality of their world and beautifully illustrate what they are fighting for: not just survival, but a return to a life of warmth and community.

The central mystery surrounding the protagonist, Renge Kasumi, and her amnesia is another major strength. Her journey to uncover her forgotten past is skillfully intertwined with the larger mystery of the robotic “Wild Hunts,” making the plot engaging on both a personal and an epic level. The action sequences are also intense and well-choreographed, effectively showcasing the unique abilities of each girl and the constant threat they face.

A Minor Critique:

While the emotional core of the series is incredibly strong, the external threat of the “Wild Hunts” can sometimes feel a bit generic for the genre. They serve their purpose as relentless and visually interesting robotic monsters, but I found myself far more invested in the mystery of the girls’ pasts than in the origins of their enemies, who felt less developed in comparison.

Final Verdict:

Momentary Lily is a thrilling and emotional tale of resilience. It’s a story that perfectly balances high-stakes action with quiet, powerful character moments. It celebrates the strength found in friendship and the courage it takes to find joy and hope even when the world is falling apart. It’s a compelling and ultimately uplifting journey that I highly recommend.

This is a must-watch for fans of post-apocalyptic anime like Girls’ Last Tour or character-driven action series like Madoka Magica. Final Score: 8.5/10
