How to Train Your Dragon Review: A Soaring and Heartfelt Masterpiece
My Take:
Every now and then, a film comes along that is simply perfect. How to Train Your Dragon is one of those films. It takes the familiar story of a boy and his dog—and brilliantly swaps the dog for a legendary, fire-breathing dragon. I was completely swept away by this thrilling, hilarious, and surprisingly emotional story about friendship, courage, and the power of empathy to change the world. It’s an animated masterpiece that soars in every sense of the word.
What I Liked:
The absolute heart and soul of this film is the unforgettable friendship between the clumsy Viking teenager, Hiccup, and the feared Night Fury dragon he names Toothless. Their bond, which develops almost entirely without words, is one of the most powerful and beautifully animated relationships in cinema history. Watching them slowly learn to trust each other, and then take to the skies in a series of jaw-droppingly beautiful flight sequences, is pure movie magic.
Hiccup is a wonderfully relatable underdog hero. In a village that values brawn and tradition, his greatest strengths are his intelligence, his curiosity, and his compassion. I loved that his journey is about proving that true strength comes from understanding, not from violence. The action is also thrilling and spectacular, from the chaotic dragon raids on the village to the epic, large-scale final battle.
A Minor Critique:
If there’s one tiny area for critique in this near-perfect film, it’s that the other Viking teens, with the notable exception of Astrid, can feel a bit one-dimensional. While they provide great comic relief, I would have loved to see their transformation from dragon-hating bullies to dragon-riding allies explored with a little more depth.
Final Verdict:
How to Train Your Dragon is one of the greatest animated films ever made. It’s a visually stunning adventure with a powerful, universal message that will resonate with audiences of all ages. It’s a story that will make you laugh, cheer, and maybe even shed a tear. The thrilling and emotional climax is a perfect culmination of Hiccup and Toothless’s incredible journey.
This is an absolute must-watch for everyone. A true classic that is as close to perfect as a film can get. Final Score: 10/10
