Dexter: Resurrection Review – A Haunting Look at Sins, Sons, and Second Chances
My Take:
Waking up from a coma after being shot by your own son is a heck of a way to start a new season, but for Dexter Morgan, it’s just another Tuesday. I was skeptical when I heard the series was continuing after the definitive ending of New Blood, but Dexter: Resurrection immediately silenced my doubts. This season is a dark, gripping, and surprisingly emotional exploration of legacy, redemption, and the inescapable bonds between a father and son. It doesn’t just ask if Dexter can survive; it asks if he even deserves to, and the journey to that answer is absolutely riveting.
What I Liked:
The absolute core of this season, and its greatest strength, is the fractured, desperate relationship between Dexter and Harrison. This isn’t a simple reunion; it’s a collision of guilt, fear, and a shared darkness that both characters are terrified to acknowledge. I found Harrison’s struggle to live a normal life while fighting his father’s violent instincts to be heartbreaking and incredibly well-acted. At the same time, seeing Dexter try to be a father, clumsy and haunted by visions of his past victims, brought a new layer of tragedy to his character that I found fascinating.
The season also introduces a brilliant new external threat that forces Dexter back into his old hunting grounds. The “Dark Passenger” serial killer targeting ride-share drivers was a compelling mystery on its own, but it was the way it spiraled into a wider, more sinister conspiracy that kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a masterful way to force Dexter to confront other monsters while battling the one within himself.
A Minor Critique:
If I have one small criticism, it’s that the introduction of a secret, high-society dinner party for serial killers, while certainly dramatic, occasionally stretched my suspension of disbelief. The one-on-one psychological cat-and-mouse games are where Dexter has always shined, and while this larger-than-life element was entertaining, it sometimes felt a step too far into comic-book territory for an otherwise grounded psychological thriller.
Final Verdict:
Dexter: Resurrection is a powerful and worthy continuation of the saga. It succeeds by grounding its thrilling murder investigations in the deeply personal and painful story of a father and son trying to find their place in the world. The season builds to a tense, action-packed finale that doesn’t offer easy answers but provides a far more resonant and emotionally satisfying conclusion than New Blood. It’s a must-watch for any long-time fan.
This is a dark, complex, and brilliant return to form that reminds us why we were so captivated by Dexter Morgan in the first place. Final Score: 9.0/10
