My Review

Ballerina Review: A Brutal and Graceful Dance of Vengeance

My Take:

Expanding the slick, violent, and lore-rich world of John Wick is a tall order, but Ballerina rises to the occasion with a brutal and surprisingly graceful pirouette. The film introduces us to Eva, a young woman whose idyllic childhood is shattered by a home invasion that leaves her orphaned and sets her on a dark path. I was immediately captivated by this raw and emotional origin story, which serves as the perfect entry point into the familiar, yet still thrilling, world of the Ruskar Roma and The Continental. Ballerina is a fantastic expansion of the universe, successfully blending the stylish, high-octane action fans crave with a deeply personal and compelling story of revenge.

What I Liked:

The film’s greatest strength is how perfectly it captures the unique aesthetic of the John Wick franchise while establishing its own distinct identity. Eva’s journey through the rigorous and unforgiving training of the Ruskar Roma is fascinating to watch, and I loved how the film brilliantly combines the discipline of ballet with lethal combat, creating a unique fighting style that is both beautiful and brutally effective. The action sequences are, as expected, top-tier, featuring the creative and bone-crunching choreography that has become the series’ trademark.

At its core, however, this is a powerful story of vengeance. Eva’s quest to hunt down the clan responsible for her father’s death provides a strong emotional anchor that gives the incredible violence a real, and often tragic, weight. The appearances of familiar faces like Winston and John Wick himself are handled perfectly, serving as welcome connections to the broader lore that feel earned and meaningful, rather than just fan service.

A Minor Critique:

If I have one small critique, it’s that the central plot follows a fairly familiar revenge-story structure. While it’s executed with incredible style and emotional depth, the narrative path of a lone warrior seeking vengeance against a powerful, shadowy organization is a well-trodden one in the action genre. The story doesn’t take many risks, but it perfects the formula.

Final Verdict:

Ballerina is a phenomenal action film and a worthy addition to the John Wick saga. It delivers the stunning set pieces and intricate world-building that fans love, all while telling a focused, emotional, and satisfying story of one woman’s relentless pursuit of justice. The climactic final assault is a breathtaking spectacle that brings Eva’s journey to a fitting, albeit bittersweet, conclusion.

This is an absolute must-watch for any fan of the John Wick franchise and a perfect choice for anyone who loves stylish, character-driven action films. Final Score: 9.0/10
